The city of Niagara Falls is located on an isthmus between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. The falls and the river border to the east with the Great Lakes to the north and south. The city itself is built on the Great Lakes lowland plain. The falls are about 3,500 feet in width, drop 175 feet, and are divided into two parts by Goat's Island.

Whirlpool Jet Boat Tour: If you feel the need for speed, take this thrill ride through Niagara's raging rapids. You'll start slow and easy in the Lower Niagara Gorge and then take off through turbulent rapids to the Niagara River Whirlpools. You aren't finished 'til you make the 16-foot drop into Devil's Hole!

Best Night View of the Illuminated Falls: If you want the best view of the colorfully illuminated falls at night, head for the observation deck of the Minolta Tower. The night view from there is matched only by the view from its Pinnacle Restaurant next to the deck.

Maid of the Mist: This boat ride takes you right to the foot of the falls, enveloping you in clouds of spray and mist that turn a calm boat ride into an exciting adventure. You'll be given a raincoat, but you'll still get wet - don't worry, it's half the fun!

Journey Behind the Falls: You can actually walk behind the falls and see what it's like to have millions of gallons of water rush over your head. You'll start at Table Rock House and wind through a series of tunnels leading to a mantle behind the falls.

Spanish Aero Car: The closest you'll get to flying over the falls without wings, this aerial tram provides an open view of the rapids leading to the falls and the Niagara Whirlpool. This is just about the best photo opportunity you can hope for.

Butterfly Conservatory: One of the most impressive exhibits in Niagara Falls is the 11,000-square-foot greenhouse containing tropical plants from all over the world. Fishing: With over 75 miles of shoreline, you simply can't ignore the options for quality fishing in this area. Lake Ontario is filled with salmon and trout, while Lake Erie is home to perch, smallmouth bass, and pickerel.Many people fish from shore, but you can always charter a boat, from canoes to large group vessels.

Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum: The world-recognized name speaks for itself. Stop by for an eye-popping, mind-boggling walk through the mysteries, oddities, and absurdities of the world. For the best time, check your disbelief and common sense at the door!

Shopping: No vacation would be complete without souvenirs, and the many varied shops and boutiques of the Souvenir Outlet Mall provide endless choices and bargains. Brand-name stores and duty-free shops are concentrated around Falls Avenue and Clifton Hill.

The summers in Niagara Falls are warm, so loose-fitting, natural fibers will be the most comfortable for sightseeing and hiking. During the autumn and spring, the days tend to be warm, but the nights get chilly. Layers are the best choice for easy transitions from indoors to out, and day to night. Winter turns Niagara into a snowy wonderland, so bundle up with a heavy coat, hat, gloves, scarves and boots.

Tax Refund: The GST (Goods & Services Tax) is reimbursable upon departure, but you must keep your receipts. Simply pick up a copy of the Tax Refund Application for Visitors at any Customs Office and most tourism centers, duty-free shops, and some hotels. The form is short and easy to fill out and, along with your receipts, it is all you need to be reimbursed on the spot as you exit the country.

Drinking: The legal drinking age in the province of Ontario in 19.

Entry: A photo ID (such as a passport) is required to enter Canada, as is proof of US citizenship (passport, birth certificate, or naturalization certificate). Visas are not required.

Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative: Effective January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including US citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or US Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.

The passport requirement does NOT apply to US citizens traveling to or returning directly from a US territory. US citizens returning directlyfrom a US territory are not considered to have left the United States and do not need to present a passport. Cultural Property: Canada has restrictions to ensure that objects of historical, cultural, artistic, or scientific significance remain in Canada. To take objects that are more than 50 years old (or made by a person who is no longer living) out of the country - including artifacts, fossils, fine art, decorative art, rare books, or archival materials - you may require an export permit. US Customs: US residents returning from Canada after a visit of 48 hours or more may return with $800 worth of duty-free articles for personal use. Up to 100 cigars (non-Cuban), 32 ounces of alcoholic beverages (travelers over 21), and 200 cigarettes per person may be included in the duty and not included in the basic exemption. Works of art are exempt, however a receipt of purchase may be required.
