Going on an unforgettable honeymoon doesn't have to involve a trip halfway around the world. Many couples today are discovering a cornucopia of opportunities for romantic getaways right here in the United States.

Overseas travel can be a whole lot of fun as well as an eye-opening experience. But for many newlyweds their financial situation may not be quite ready for that yet. A Paris getaway may sound like a dream honeymoon, but you might be better saving that for the ten-year anniversary. Not only will you have the opportunity to save up some money and do it right, but you will also have the chance to reignite the spark in your marriage.

For the time being, however, there are many exotic places right here in our own country that will kick off you and your spouse's new life together in style. Here are a few examples of the top honeymoon destinations in the United States, as well as a little taste of what they have to offer.

Hawaii

In spite of the fact that plane tickets from the mainland can be pretty expensive, honeymoons in Hawaii are more popular than ever. With gorgeous beaches, five-star hotels, and perfect weather, it is no wonder. Surely, if you decide to have your honeymoon in Hawaii, you will have ample opportunities for romance and adventure.

Finding something to do on the Hawaiian Islands is easy, but if you happen to be on the island of Kauai at the perfect time, you might be in for an extra special treat. Once or twice a year when the rainfall in the mountains is heavy enough, the Waimea River rages so hard that a strange phenomenon occurs where the river flows into the Pacific Ocean.

When enough water is flowing down the mouth of the Waimea, the force of the ocean pushes it back so that it actually creates a series of standing waves several feet high on the river itself. Surfers and boogie-boarders from all around flock to the mouth of the river when this incredible event happens.

Even if you don't want to hop in at the mouth, hiking around the breathtaking 3,000-foot deep Waimea Canyon further upriver can make for some marvelous views. Pack a lunch and stop at a scenic vista for a secluded picnic.

New York

New York state ranks just behind Hawaii when it comes to romantic getaways. This is primarily because of New York City and Niagara Falls. If you are looking for exciting nightlife, the best food in the world, and gorgeous skyline views, you can't go wrong with New York. On the other hand, Niagara Falls offers plenty of great rates with just the right amount of kitsch.

There is, however, a third region of the Empire State that is a great honeymoon destinations but still far enough under the radar that it will feel special. A retreat to the Finger Lakes region of New York State can help you kick off your marriage right. Towns like Watkin's Glen and Ithaca offer all kinds of options for cozy cabin rentals and quiet restaurants. At the ends of several of the lakes lie impressive gorges that make for fantastic day hikes and group travel.

Wine lovers can also revel in the amazing number of wineries that occupy the fertile soil around these lakes. You and the love of your life can make a day out of traveling from vineyard to vineyard and sampling all the delicious flavors that the Finger Lakes region has to offer.

Florida

The Sunshine State ranks high on the top spots list because of its beautiful year-round weather and bustling tourism industry. Walt Disney World in Orlando can make for a fun-filled trip and the beaches, culture, and nightlife of bustling Miami will keep even the busiest bodies occupied late into the evenings.

The opportunity to visit the Florida Keys is another reason that lovebirds flock to Florida. While many people just fly straight to Key West, why not consider flying into Miami, seeing the sites in the city for a few days, and then renting a car for the unforgettable road trip out on the keys?

Once you leave mainland Florida you will set out on a 127-mile long section of U.S. route one. This connects most of the keys and allows you drive all the way to the end. One stretch of bridge runs a full seven miles between islands. If you can afford the extra money to rent a convertible for this scenic drive, by all means go for it. Few roadways in the country offer the views, the refreshing ocean smells, and the sense of adventure as driving out route 1 to Key West.

The point of a honeymoon isn't where you go; it is who you go with. When you are so in love with someone that you decide you want to spend the rest of your life together, sometimes you might even forget where you're at. These top honeymoon destinations are great places to get lost in love with that special someone.
