Journey to Italy's Big 3

Ah, Italy. Just a mere mention of Il Bel Paese (The Beautiful Country) conjures a never-ending feast of Old World architecture and historical icons, labyrinths of cobblestone streets and canals, and, of course, arguably the most delicious food on the planet. The big “Boot” holds endless possibilities for adventure, and we’ve got your guide for an epic Italy Journey that will surely leave its mark on your globe-trotting soul.

VENICE

A maze of vibrant canals immediately comes to mind when one thinks of Venice. Walk through narrow alleys or glide through the waterways to explore St. Mark’s Square and Campo Santa Maria Formosa.

YOU NEED TO FEEL THIS

There’s no feeling quite like a gondola ride. The long ornate boats look like a dream sailing through the water, propelled by manpower from a trusted gondolier. If you’re lucky, they might even sing a few notes for you.

YOU NEED TO SEE THIS

Italy is a land of artists and craftsmen, and one Venetian island holds some of the most talented in the country. The skilled artisans of Murano use fire and bold colors to create their famously beautiful glass. Admire their craftsmanship during a live demonstration and pick up a few pieces to bring home.

SIDE TRIP

O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo? In fair Verona, of course. Be swept up in the romance and beauty of this nearby city made famous by William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

FLORENCE

As the birthplace of the Renaissance, Florence is a work of art in itself. What it lacks in size it more than makes up for in immeasurable experiences. From the famous Duomo and Uffizi Gallery, to hidden discoveries like the Medici’s secret Vasari Corridor and street art by Clet Abraham, Florence offers something new no matter how many times you visit.

YOU NEED TO TASTE THIS

All of it — we’re serious. Feast your way through the Mercato San Lorenzo sampling local cheeses, truffles, and olives from the farms of nearby Tuscany. This region is famous for its wine, so be sure to pick up a bottle or 10. Vino lovers can even book a day tour to Tuscany’s vineyards.

YOU NEED TO TRY THIS

There is no better souvenir than bringing home a new skill, and you’ll impress all your friends back home with some fabulous recipes. Have your travel consultant arrange a cooking class and learn how to make the perfect pizza and creamy gelato from a professional Italian chef.

SIDE TRIP

Book a day tour to visit Pisa and its famous Leaning Tower. We know you’ve seen the pictures, but attempting the perfect shot of you “supporting” the tower is half the fun.

ROME

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and it would be an injustice to spend only 24 hours there. With iconic sites like the Colosseum, Vatican City, and Roman Forum, we recommend at least 72.

YOU NEED TO SEE THIS

Rome is truly a treasure trove Insta-worthy spots and sites. We already mentioned a few must-sees above, but you should add the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, and Pantheon to that list.

YOU NEED TO HEAR THIS

Whether you’re Catholic, another doctrine, or not particularly religious at all, listening to the Pope celebrate mass is a unique opportunity. The Papal Audience is held daily Monday through Saturday at St. Peter’s Basilica. Bonus: It’s free.

SIDE TRIP

A day tour to Naples is well worth it for pizza lovers. Plus, a visit to the nearby archaeological site of the doomed city of Pompeii is often included.
